Year 1/2 - Our Learning
English
Welcome back to Year 1/2! Mrs Ashworth and Mrs Vanes hope you have had an Egg-cellent Easter and are raring to go for the summer term! It is going to be a busy one!
Year 2 will be completing their SATs during the month of May and Year 1 will take the Phonics Screening Check during the week beginning 12th June.
In English, we are starting the new term with a 'Big Write' unit based on the short film 'Float' by Pixar. We will be exploring the themes and messages behind the film and writing our own poems in response.
Our fiction unit will involve exploring a range of stories on a 'Quest' theme including Lost and Found and The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers.
We will link our non-ficiton unit to our history topic exploring toys from the past. This will involve writing a non-fiction text, instructions and a recount.
We will continue with our daily spelling and grammar sessions for Year 2 and Little Wandle phonics for Year 1. Handwriting and VIPERs comprehension sessions will also be an important part of our English time table.
Science
In science this term, we will be learning about plants. We will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants and find out about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. We will explore and be able to describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants including trees. As part of the topic we will enjoy observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. Our investigations will help us to find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.
Maths
Year 1 children will extend their knowledge of place value to numbers within 100. They will be introduced to fractions and multiplication and division. We will also be exploring measure including length, height, mass and volume. We will finish the year with work on postiion and direction.
Year 2 will be focusing on SATs preparation which will include revising addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions in particular. We will move on to measure including length and height, mass, capacity and temperature before finishing the year with position and direction.
Topic
Our history topic this term involves exploring how toys have changed over time. Children will begin the topic by thinking about their personal 'Toy Timeline' before interviewing adults to find out what their favourite toys were as children. We will make links between this topic and our previous Victorians topic by investigating what toys Victorian children played with using a variety of sources. We will describe, compare and sort old and new toys and place toys on a timeline.
In geography, we will be exploring 'Marvellous Mapping' which involve using maps and atlases as well as developing our fieldwork skills. We will create our own maps and explore from a 'birds eye view'. Our atlas work will support our undertsanding of the continents and oceans of the world.
