Ash Class Learning

English

In English this term we are learning about:

We are going to be moving our learning forward in English via some new and exciting texts. We’ll read ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes and â€˜Journey’ by Aaron Becker and learn how to put more complex sentences together to write a setting description and a narrative. Year 3s will be introduced to paragraphs and Year 4 will continue their understanding of paragraphs by organising ideas around a theme. Year 3 will learn to include conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time, place and cause and Year 4 will continue their learning about how fronted adverbials enable the reader to grasp more information about a scenario. Year 4 will continue to add more exciting noun phrases with the addition of modifying adjectives. We will explore further how to edit and evaluate our own writing and others’ and suggest improvements.

 

Science

In Science this term we are learning about:

 

This half term we will be exploring states of matter and changes of state in solids, liquids and gases. The children will be describing the properties of each state and carrying out practical investigations exploring melting, freezing, evaporating and condensing. We will describe the different stages of the water cycle and look at how temperature affects the rate of evaporation. Children will be encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, take measurements and draw scientific conclusions.

Maths

In Maths this term we are learning about:

This term, we began to add and subtract numbers mentally and using formal methods of column addition and subtraction with up to 3 digits for Year 3; and up to 4 digits for Year 4. Children will be estimating the answer to a calculation and using inverse operations to check answers. They will also solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction.

Year 3 will be learning to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables. And will count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100.

Year 4 will be recalling and using multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12. Year 4 will also count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000 and will use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally. Both year groups will use this knowledge to solve problems.

We will be learning about area and finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares. This will also include making shapes and comparing areas.

Foundation Subjects

This term the foundation subjects we are learning about are:

Computing: Creating Media

We will be learning how to predict, test and explain more complex software. We are going to take photographs and record video to tell a story.

Art: Prehistoric Painting

We are going to continue exploring prehistoric art and recreate the style of cave artists using charcoal and natural pigments. The children will experiment with colour mixing, and create large-scale artworks.

D& T: Textiles

Continuing the topic on cushions, we will learn how to use cross-stitch and appliqué to design and make a cushion.

Music: Creating Compositions

After watching a short animation, children will create a story with soundscapes to respond to what they have seen. 

PSHE: Families and relationships.

The areas we will be studying in particular are: stereotypes, bullying, boundaries of ourselves and others, repsecting people’s differences and how we deal with change and loss in our lives.

RE: Christianity

Children will learn about the daily life of Christians, what they do in their family life and in their communities. We will look at festivals they celebrate and where they worship.

PE: Intro to Dance and Intro to invasion games (Tag Rugby)

We will be playing competitive games and applying basic principles of invasion games and tactics. They will learn how to work as a team in dance as well as different balances and ways to move. This will lead on to being able to create a sequence which they will have the opportunity to perform.

Spanish: Numbers and ages

We are going to be learning how to count to 12 in Spanish. The children will be taught to recognise and sound out phonemes for letters ‘u’ and ‘z’, ‘ñ’. They will be able to follow the sentence structure for saying how old they are.

Geography: In Autumn term, the children will learn about seasons, explore what lines of latitude/longitude are, and what climate zones are. They will investigate Antarctica and it’s polar climate made up of ice sheets, snow and mountains.

History:  Stone Age, Bronze Age and The Iron Age.

Children will plot the chronology and significance of prehistory and use archaeological evidence to learn about the prehistoric dwelling of Skara Brae and the Bronze Age. The children will learn how bronze transformed prehistoric life and they will look at the importance of trade during the Iron Age.
