Vision

At Newhey we are dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where every child feels seen, heard, and cared for. Our vision is for wellbeing to sit at the heart of school life, so that all children feel safe to be themselves, confident in who they are, and proud of their individuality.

We believe it is vital that pupils see themselves reflected in what they learn through our curriculum, our environment, and the way we celebrate the diverse world around them. When children feel valued and represented, they are empowered to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

Intent

Our intent is to support the whole child by placing wellbeing, inclusion, and belonging at the centre of everything we do and woven into a core school values. We are committed to ensuring every child feels listened to, supported, and respected, while helping pupils to understand their emotions and develop positive mental health. Through our approach we aim to celebrate individuality and difference, teaching children the importance of kindness, empathy, and acceptance for others both within our school community and in the wider world. We strive to empower pupils to value themselves, recognise the worth of others, and develop the emotional confidence and resilience they need to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.

Implementation

We actively promote wellbeing through a thoughtful, inclusive, and proactive approach across all areas of school life. Wellbeing is embedded into our curriculum, daily routines, and school culture, ensuring it is not treated as a standalone subject.

Woven into our everyday life includes:

  • Following the My Happy Mind programme alongside our PSHE curriculum, supporting children to understand their feelings, build resilience, and develop positive relationships
  • Creating learning experiences that reflect pupils’ identities and celebrate diversity such as our inclusive books chosen by pupils for our libraries
  • Teaching children about equality, respect, and protected characteristics in age-appropriate and meaningful ways
  • Marking and celebrating key events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Children’s Mental Health Week, Black History Month, Pride and Acceptance Week
  • Encouraging pupil voice and open conversations, ensuring children feel confident to share their thoughts and feelings
  • Targeted support is provided through ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) interventions, offering both small group and one-to-one sessions tailored to individual needs.
  • Collaborative art projects and displays focused on equality and inclusion, helping children express themselves creatively while learning about fairness and respect

Impact

By embedding wellbeing and inclusion into everyday practice we make a lasting difference. Our approach supports children to feel happy, safe, and confident in being themselves, while developing strong emotional awareness, resilience, and self-esteem. Through a culture of respect, empathy, and understanding, pupils build positive relationships and learn to value both their own individuality and the differences of others. As a result, our school community celebrates diversity, promotes equality and nurtures children who are emotionally secure, socially aware, and well equipped to contribute positively to the wider world. Our pupils understand their role in creating a kind, inclusive and respectful environment where everyone can succeed.
