Rowan Class Learning

English

In English this term we are learning about the work of author and illustrator Shaun Tan, exploring how meaning is conveyed through powerful imagery as well as text. Children will analyse themes, characters and atmosphere before developing their own creative writing inspired by Tan’s distinctive style. They will continue to strengthen their grammar, punctuation and sentence construction skills, applying these effectively across a range of fiction and non-fiction outcomes.

Maths

Year 5 pupils will deepen their understanding of decimals, including hundredths and thousandths, and explore the links between fractions, decimals and percentages. They will practise converting between these forms and apply their knowledge to problem-solving situations. Children will also develop their understanding of geometry by calculating and comparing area and volume, estimating measurements and applying these skills to real-life contexts.

Science

Our Science learning will focus on Light and Reflection. Children will explore how light travels, how we see objects, how shadows are formed and how mirrors reflect light. They will work scientifically by planning investigations, drawing ray diagrams, recording results and using evidence to draw conclusions.

Foundation Subjects

This half term’s foundation subjects are packed with exciting opportunities for learning:

• Geography – children will carry out an independent fieldwork enquiry in the local area, developing their data collection and analysis skills.

• History – the topic Unheard Histories will challenge pupils to explore historical significance by deciding who should appear on a £10 note.

• Art – pupils will create interactive installation sculptures, exploring space, scale and viewer experience.

• Design and Technology – children will design and programme a monitoring device, including coding and 3D CAD work.

• Computing – using a Mars Rover theme, pupils will learn about data handling, binary and how computers store and transmit information.

• Music – through looping and remixing, children will perform, compose and layer musical ideas.

• PE – tennis lessons will develop coordination, technique and teamwork.

• Spanish – children will build their language skills by describing portraits using a wider range of vocabulary.

• PSHE – learning will focus on safety and the changing body, helping pupils make informed and responsible choices.

Throughout the half term, our school value of resilience and the British value of individual liberty will be woven through learning, encouraging children to persevere, reflect and take responsibility for their own ideas and choices.
