Year 1 - Our Learning

English

English

Welcome back to Year 1! Miss Unsworth and the Year 1 Team hope you have had a lovely break and welcome you back for the Summer Term.

In English, we are starting the year with a 'Big Write' unit based on the short film 'Float' by Pixar. We will be exploring the film's themes in order to write a poem celebrating our differences and our talents.

Our next unit will be 'Traditional Tales'. We will share written and oral versions of traditional talesWe will have fun retelling the stories and creating our own versions using story maps.

In our non-fiction unit, we will delve into toys from the past and explore the features of a non-fiction text. This learning will link to our History topic and will involve writing a non-fiction text, instructions and a recount.

Phonics

We will have daily phonics sessions that will help to improve our learning and understanding of phonemes and graphemes. This will be the foundation for our reading and spelling.

We will take the Phonics Screening Check during the week beginning 12th June.

Reading

We have small group reading sessions three times per week where we enjoy reading and answering questions about fictional and non-fictional texts.

We will be listening to lots of songs and rhymes to help us count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will be building on our understanding of place value to explore numbers up to 100.
